Jonian Dolphin Conservation organized opening of Taranto Cetaceans' Education Centre KETOS, within the BioTourS project.
Located in one of the most prestigious eighteenth-century buildings - Palazzo Amati, KETOS deals with the promotion of the sea and cetaceans, through training, educational, scientific research and environmental communication activities. Ketos represents a unique ten-year experience of the Jonian Dolphin Conservation, which represents excellence in scientific research on cetaceans and in the management of marine projects with a particular focus on the study of environmental impact.
The establishment of such a center will further improve the capacities of Jonian Dolphin Conservation, which, taking into account the professionalism and experience of the staff, will have a significant impact on the education of visitors.
Since the opening of the Center, many activities have been organized, starting from the visit of 14 science teachers on October 27th 2022, who recognized the importance of this place for the further education of their students.
For now approximately 1000 students and teachers are expected to visit Taranto Cetaceans' Education Centre, and bearing in mind the great interest, an increase in the number of visitors is expected in the following period. The first school visit was organized on Thursday 26th January 2023, during which students, thanks to the experienced staff, had the opportunity to find out more about cetaceans through many activities by using the equipment which Centre owns.
